I got into the game by seeing 2gd demonstrate strafe jumpjng mechanics and other tricks that made the game seem much more engaging than the average shooter. If you enjoy a feeling of noticeable self-improvement and skill ceiling that isn't capped so low you're equally leveled with any sod that gets a jump on you first then quake has that in spades.
Thats enough to get you started with to have great fun. What he said though, unfortunately theres no in game strafe jumping tutorial, so you have to look up youtube for that and try it in game, custom map like Blood Covenant is good for that since it has a long straight section for practice.
